Submarines have a distinct smell!!!!
When nuclear submarines are at sea, they mostly stay submerged with a sealed atmosphere. Part of the system removes carbon dioxide (CO2) to prevent fatal buildup. Submarines use a chemical called amine for this. When cool, amine absorbs CO2, and when hot, it releases it. The amine cycles through a machine called a CO2 Scrubber, which heats and cools the CO2, pushing it into the ocean to keep the air breathable.
This system is very effective, but the downside is the amine gives the air a rather “unique” smell. This smell permeates every part of the submarine, including the crew's clothing and skin.
In addition to the amine smell, submarine crews are exposed to cooking odors, hydraulic oil vapors, diesel exhaust, venting of the sanitary tanks, and the smell of a large number of closely confined people. The interiors become quite fragrant. Crew members get used to it and eventually don’t notice it, but others do.
When I was on a submarine, I once flew home for vacation in my civilian clothes. On the plane, an older lady next to me asked, “Are you on submarines?” Surprised, I replied, “Yes, how did you know?” She said, “My husband was on submarines. I’ll never forget the smell.”
