Machu Picchu, the legendary Incan city perched high in the Peruvian Andes, was not a complete secret to the world before its famed "discovery" by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. In fact, local farmers and indigenous families had known about the site for generations, living nearby and occasionally using its terraces for agriculture. When Bingham arrived, it was these local Quechua-speaking residents who guided him to the overgrown ruins, revealing a city cloaked in dense jungle and hidden from view.
Bingham's initial photographs captured a Machu Picchu very different from what we know today—swallowed by vegetation, with moss-covered stone walls and terraces obscured by thick underbrush. This initial discovery, made possible by local knowledge, sparked international interest and led to extensive excavation, preservation, and restoration efforts.
