Magnetic north is on the move... again!

The magnetic North Pole has officially shifted, continuing its journey away from Canada and toward Siberia. This means it's time to recalibrate the navigation systems on ships and airplanes. But there's no need to worry – your phone and GPS will update automatically!

Every five years, experts from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the British Geological Survey (BGS) join forces to produce an update to the World Magnetic Model (WMM) that pinpoints the location of magnetic north, the point where Earth’s magnetic field points straight down.

Unlike the geographical North Pole, which stays fixed at the top of Earth’s rotational axis, magnetic north is constantly shifting due to the movement of molten iron and nickel inside our planet.

Whether you’re using a compass or GPs, it's always good to know which way is truly north!
